For in him you have been enriched in every way – in all your speaking and in all your knowledge – because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. 1 Corinthians 1:5-6

How difficult it was for Paul to write a letter to the church in Corinth trying to solve their various problems. Paul started with pointing out the solution of their problems in a positive way. He did this by encouraging them how they had been enriched in Jesus Christ which changed their ways of speaking and thinking.

What I received from Jesus today is that Christians will have less problems and more testimonies if we can be enriched by Jesus in every way. Our way of speaking will change. What we know, what we learn and what we think will change. We will be faithfully sharing the true fellowship with Jesus and with all who have called into His fellowship. It reminds me of the movie “the fellowship of the Ring”!

Dear Lord Jesus,

Help me to be in your fellowship so that I can be enriched by you in every way – my speaking, my knowledge and my all. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.
Romans 16:17

A missional lifestyle comes with names after names of friends, helpers, co-workers. Jesus asks me to count those names and here is the result:

1. One who delivered Paul’s letter to Rome(Phoebe, Romans 16: 1-2).

2. Twenty-seven names of co-workers, helpers and friends in Rome, not including their house group members.

3. Eight names of co-workers, helpers and friends with Paul to send greetings.

A missional lifestyle also comes with people who cause divisions and put obstacles. Paul urged us to watch out and keep away from them.

How many names do we have as co-workers, helpers and friends as we serve the Lord? How many names do we know that we need to watch out and keep away from? Do we intentionally or unintentionally become those people who cause divisions and put obstacles to God’s servants?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to build up relationships with more co-workers, helpers and friends, and to enjoy the team work as Paul did. Open my eyes to see those names that I need to watch out and keep away from. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

"God wants the combination of his steady, constant calling and warm, personal counsel in Scripture to come to characterize us, keeping us alert for whatever he will do next. May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all. Then we'll be a choir—not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus!" Romans 15:5-6 (The Message)

Praise to the Lord that I have had a very special personal counsel from Him when I was having this devotion today. I think it has been at least three months since I used Eugene Peterson’s The Message, for I usually use the NIV version. But today Jesus told me to look at the Message. As a musician, I think this is really a tailor-made message for me!

Just like Paul, I would like all those people around me and myself to receive a spirit of unity. And in attaining this, we need to enter into a steady, constant calling and warm, personal relationship with Jesus. And Jesus is just like the best choral conductor ever to blend our lives into a stunning anthem, singing in harmony to glorify God.

Jesus also told me that we need to do some important preparations in order for Him to conduct this anthem:
1. Build up people around us.(v. 2)

2. Receive endurance and encouragement from a constant, warm personal relationship with Jesus daily through reading the Bible to receive a spirit of unity. (v. 4-5)

3. Accept other people just as Christ accepted you. (v. 7)

Let’s follow closely to our Lord Jesus Christ to sing a wonderful anthem to glorify God!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to follow your lead to sing, in beautiful harmony, an anthem to glorify your Name. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. Romans 14:4

I have seen many conflicts, misunderstandings, arguments, dissension, bitterness and destruction in many churches. In most cases, such conflict is because of judging God’s servants. Satan loves that to happen, and Jesus is deeply hurt when such judgments happen.

We can see quite a number of verses in Romans 14 talking about the sin of judging God’s servant:

1. Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgement on disputable matters. (v. 1)

2. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? (v.4)

3. Why do you judge your brother? (v. 10)

4. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of …(v. 20)

There is a Chinese saying: “Before you beat someone’s dog, you need to know whom the dog belongs to.” Do you know the consequence of judging and beating God’s servant? Do you know how happy Satan is when you do that? Do you know how painful it is to Jesus when He sees us doing that to His servant? Do you know how much you have destroyed God’s work?

Stop judging anyone anymore!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to stop judging other people, and instead to appreciate them and to build up relationships. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Wake up from your slumber…put on the armor of light…clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Romans 13:11-14

In just five days, it’s 2010. Do you think that 2009 passed away so fast?! How many years do we still have? How many years do I have? Only God knows! Today Jesus encouraged me to do three things:

1. Wake up – Don’t lead a life in slumber and letting time pass. Catch the wave of the Holy Spirit.

2. Put on – To put aside the deeds of all kinds of darkness, and put on the armor of light to be a mighty warrior of Jesus.

3. Clothe with – Clothe myself with the Lord Jesus Christ, and not be thinking all day long to gratify the desires of my sinful nature.

Dear Lord Jesus,
I understand that it is not easy to live out these three things daily. Help me, Lord! In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. Romans 12:6

Today is Boxing Day! I received a wonderful message from Jesus to you and me: What gifts have you received from the Holy Spirit on Boxing Day?

But first let me ask you:
1. Have you offered your body as a living sacrifice to God in order to enter into a life changing journey of “transformation”? Or you are still living in the “old self” and the pattern of this world?

2. How have you been using the gift of the Holy Spirit to build up the body of Christ and to live out a Missional Lifestyle?

I do hope and pray that you have unwrapped the gifts from the Holy Spirit. May you know these gifts and be willing to use them!

Dear Lord Jesus,
On this Boxing Day, may you open my eyes to see all those gifts you have prepared to give me. Show me how to unwrap them and lead me how to use them. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

What then? What Israel sought so earnestly it did not obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened, as it is written: “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes so that they could not see and ears so that they could not hear, to this very day.” Romans 11:7-8

Do we know if our hearts are hardened and our eyes are darkened? I don’t think so! Did the Israelites know? No! Then how can we be the remnant and the elect? Only by God’s grace and as we accept God’s grace and not reject His grace.

Has your heart been softened and your eyes been opened? This is a challenge from the Lord Jesus Christ to me and to you on this Christmas Day!

Dear Lord Jesus,
On this Christmas Day, may you open my eyes to be able to see the things you want me to see. May you soften my heart that I can accept more and love more. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Jesus prompted me to remember a scene half a year ago. I was having my daily devotion at London Heathrow Airport, ready to go home after a visit with my son Ignatius to my spiritual father, Rev. Dr. John Stott in July 2009. A gentleman came and sat beside me when he saw I was reading the Bible. He asked, “Are you a Christian?” He said, “Oh, that is so wonderful. I am a Baptist pastor.” Then we shared lots of things about the Bible and our faith. After sometime, he knew that I was an Anglican priest and he started to ask me some hard questions about salvation and theology. Then he knew that I was about to be consecrated to be a bishop and his face got pale and talked to me in a quite rough manner. After half an hour he smiled and said, “Bishop Silas, you are OK. You are being saved!”

Can you imagine how sad I felt at that time! A Baptist pastor needed to have half an hour to question whether an Anglican bishop is being saved or not! And I don’t think that he was arrogant. I think he was just very concerned.

Who are you? Are you OK and being saved or are you a disobedient and obstinate Christian?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for saving me! Help me to be an obedient and teachable disciple of you. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” Romans 9:17

The context of this is in Exodus 9:16 before the seven Plague. Pharaoh had a chance to understand and accept the purpose of God in a positive way but he didn’t. What if God is saying this to us today? What have we heard? How do we need to prepare ourselves?

This is my response:

Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for raising me up for your very purpose. I am willing to be a display of your power and that your name will be proclaimed in all the earth. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Romans 8:1-39

The Lord told me today that the problem today for most Christians is submission and commitment. The reason is very simple: their minds are set on what the sinful nature desires and not on what the Spirit desires.

We do not want to be controlled by the Spirit but we are controlled by the sinful nature. That’s why we are so hostile to other people. We don’t know we are hostile to God in the same way. We think that some people want to control us. We don’t know it is God’s work to work through God’s people so that we can be controlled by the Spirit!

In April 1982 my wife Michelle who was then a choir member of my home parish, Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Hong Kong, gave me a 3”x2” bookmark:

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Romans 8: 35

God used Michelle to lead me back to a mindset of submission to the call of our Lord Jesus Christ not to insist on my own desire to climb up the ladder in the Government but to go to seminary and prepare myself to become an Anglican priest.

The mindset and path to submission to the Holy Spirit is not easy, but definitely it is life and peace. About which mindset and path are you being warned and called today, my dear friend?

Dear Lord Jesus,

But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. Romans 7:6

Have we really been rescued by Jesus or just by the Church? This is the question that I received from Jesus today.
Am I a Christian or just a 'churchman'? If we have been rescued by Jesus, then we should be serving in the new way of the Spirit so that we will bear fruit to God. Do we have any signs showing our new way of serving in the Spirit? Do people see our fruits?

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thanks you for rescuing me to be a Christian and not just a 'churchman'. Help me to serve you in a new way by the Holy Spirit so that I can bear fruit, much fruit. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Romans 6:2

Yesterday the theme of my post is “Access granted”. Today I experienced that in a very special way. This morning I went into Richmond Centre, and as I went in a shop, the security alarm sounded. I didn’t notice but when I left, the alarm sounded again. I was stopped by a staff there and he looked at me and said, “You didn’t steal anything here.” I said no, he looked at my eyes and waved me to go. Then I tried to go in two stores and the alarm sounded. So I stepped out before entering. I gave my wallet to my wife, tried again, and it sounded. Then I gave my jacket to her and it sounded. I dare not to try again and left Richmond Centre. When I went home, I took off everything I wore and searched everything. I had to find out why. After ten minutes, I found out that there was a small white security chip inside my new jeans which I bought in LA in September. 'Access denied' because I had a chip I didn’t know! Actually, when I bought that jeans, they forgot to take the chip out and when I left that shop or other shops, the alarm sounded but no one noticed or care. But today someone noticed and I nearly got into big trouble!

We say and know that we died to sin and we can not live in sin any longer. But in fact, do we know whether we have a similar kind of chip, sin which forbids us to gain access to the grace of God?

There are five “offer” and five “obey” in the whole chapter. Who do we offer everything to in order to gain access for those things we need? Who do we really obey to? Who reigns in you?

Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to shine upon us to see that “chip” we have that we cannot gain access to the grace of God. Let’s remove it as soon as possible that we can enter into the grace of God.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for giving me a wonderful opportunity today to experience your warning. Help me to have a spiritual check up daily that I can gain access to your grace. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2

If you have experienced the pain of entering a wrong access code in the computer, then you know what I mean. You tried all kind of numbers and you still got: Access denied, access denied…How did you feel!

What I received today from Jesus is this picture. How many times in life that we want to get “Access granted” but for various reasons it is still like hitting a wall. I see three steps here:
Jesus – Access – Grace

Wow! Through Jesus we have “Access granted” and then everything opens up. We are no more slaves of hopelessness and disappointments. Instead “we have gained access by faith into His grace” so that we know how to rejoice: to rejoice in the hope of the glory of God and not in our own glory, to rejoice in sufferings and not disappointed by sufferings. Most of all, we rejoice in God as we have received reconciliation!

Wow! I have a new way of facing with sufferings, for Jesus told me today, “Do you see my good will in building up your character so that you can be more hopeful, peaceful, faithful and joyful at all times?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for giving me all those sufferings and challenges to build up my character that I can glorify your mighty Name. Help me to experience the joy in receiving “Access granted”. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. Romans 4:20-21

Jesus is so wonderful! Before I turned the Bible to Romans 4 to have my daily devotion, I looked at the day of my post today and it is DAY 121. Then Jesus reminded me of Psalm 121, one of my most favorite psalm in which I had an important encounter with Jesus in August 1990:

I lift up my eyes to the hills where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121: 1-2

My body is shaking and tears are pouring down from my eyes now as I read this:

Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. Romans 4: 20-21

Praise the Lord that He talks to me in a very special way. So many times I have wavered and fall into discouragement and bitterness but whenever I can lift up my eyes to Jesus, my help comes! Thank you Lord Jesus Christ!

Dear Lord Jesus,
I praise you for this wonderful experience this morning. Help me to focus on you and be strengthened. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

The righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:22-24

My wife Michelle and I looked at each other after reading this chapter as our devotion. She said, “It’s so sad, ‘there is no one righteous, not even one’”. We both had tears in our eyes as we felt the weight of the real situation of humanity.

I just received the completion of the statistic result of a questionnaire I designed from some small groups of a church. This is a growing church and yet there are only 4.6% of their 323 small group members are having daily devotion!

An intimate relationship with Jesus daily is the only way that our lives can be blessed, anointed and glorify God and yet we are unwilling. I guess out of that 4.6% there are some “doing” daily devotion as “duty”, “guilty” or “study” but not as a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus.

Let’s encourage each others to have a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus daily that our lives will not fall short of God’s glory!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Shine on me, walk with me, talk to me and bless me daily that I can glorify your Holy Name. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
