'Wherever I banish them,
all the survivors of this evil nation will prefer death to life,
declares the Lord Almighty.'
Jeremiah 8: 3
Bible Study
This chapter describes the approaching destruction of Judah and Jerusalem as if it had already happened. The terrible consequences as describes in this chapter would be the result out of their stubborn and unfaithful. Jeremiah's prophecy caused him deep sorrow(vv. 18-22) especially when he was prophesying death and destruction, false prophets were predicting peace(vv. 10-11).
Jeremiah describes the situation of those Israelites was like:
"I have listened attentively,
but they do not say what is right.
No one repents of his wickedness,
saying, "What have I done?"
Each pursues his own course like a horse charging into battle.
Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons,
and the dove, the swift and the thrush observe the time of their migration.
But my people do not know the requirements of the Lord."
Jeremiah 8: 6-7
"What have I done? I have done nothing wrong? Right?" is a kind of common belief in most people's heart! Not knowing that we have sinned against God and our neighbours so that we have nothing to repent is perhaps the most serious and deadly situation of a human being.
Are you one of those people?
My Spiritual Journal
What I receive from Jesus is: Prefer death to life?
Jesus reminds me of what Moses said at the end of his life:
"See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.
For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.
But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.
This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."
Deuteronomy 30: 15-20
Mose said this in around 1406B.C., Israel was destroyed by Asyria in 722B.C., Isaiah prophesied this chapter around 680B.C. and Judah was destroyed by Babylon in 587B.C..
No one prefer death to life but the reality is that most people do not know that they have chosen death rather than life! How sad!
What is your choice? What is the new ways to make sure that you have made the right choice to live?
Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to choose life. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.
