DAY 165 - As Foolish and Bewitched as the Galatians

Today’s Reading: Galatians 3

Welcome! The purpose of this blog is to encourage Christians to have daily devotion - a wonderful and intimate time with Jesus. There are three reasons for you to use this blog as your daily devotion:
1. A healthy spiritual diet - One chapter of the Bible daily. We really need at least one chapter of Bible daily so that we are well fed.
2. A good example of Spiritual Journaling - What I have committed for 1,189 days(the Bible has 1,189 chapters)to write this daily post is not for teaching purposes but this is my daily spiritual journal - I write down what I hear from Jesus and how I experience His intimate relationship with me each day.

I have launched a wide-spectrum research on daily devotion and have found out that there are less than 10% of Christians that are having daily devotion. Out of that 10%, many having daily devotion are doing so because of guilt (they know that they are Christians and need to have daily devotion and feel guilty if they don’t do that), duty (they need to fulfill their duty as a Christian) or study(lots of Christians primarily use their daily devotion as a time to study the Bible). I do pray and hope that you will make up your mind to have a relational daily devotion so that you can have an intimate time with Jesus. I pray that you will write your own spiritual journal as well.

3. An online discipler – One of the reasons that so many Christians do not have daily devotion is because they do not have a disciple. A discipler can help them build up this basic element of discipleship when they first become Christians. The best way for you is to have a discipler to walk with you for a certain period of time so that daily devotion become a good habit. Or, you may have a small group of two to three people to encourage and be accountable to each other so that you won’t stop your daily devotion. I offer myself as your online disciple to walk with you daily to enrich your spiritual journey. So, shall we start this journey with Jesus Christ our Lord now!

Please read Galatians 3: 1 – 29 and listen to what the Lord Jesus Christ would like to tell you before reading my Spiritual Journal below. You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Galatians 3: 1-2

By telling the Galatians that he could oppose Peter face to face when Peter was wrong, Paul opposed the Christians that he had personally taught, calling them as “foolish” and “bewitched”.

The word used here is not moros, so often used in Christ's parables (Matt 5:22; 7:26; 25:2 ff.). Moros refers to one who is mentally deficient or who plays the fool, particularly in the moral or spiritual realm. In Galatians, the word is anoetos which, quite differently, suggests the actions of one who can think but fails to use his powers of perception. Paul used this strong term and did not call them brothers but Galatians and “bewitched” because they were going the wrong way. They made a doctrine of salvation by works and not faith, foolishly denying Paul’s teaching of justification by faith.

Today Jesus shows me a modern version of a similar situation regarding Christians nowadays . In Paul’s time, the Galatians went back to practicing the Old Testament law by working hard to obeying to those laws and not believing in Jesus by faith. Faith is always a relationship and not workmanship. As in my research, less than 10% of Christians are having daily devotion and instead many are doing lots of things in the church. They can take all kinds of courses, lots of learning, lots of information but not transformation. We are no different from 2,000 years ago. Of those 10% of Christians who are having daily devotion, many “work” on it because of “guilt”, “duty” or “study”. Even if we have daily devotion, it may not be relational and transformational. We really need to enter into this daily intimate, sweet and personal relationship with Jesus. If not, we are just as “foolish” and “bewitched” as the Galatians were!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for saving me, walking with me and loving me daily. Help me to not step into those old ways of life so that my life can be transformed daily and my love to you can be increased more dearly. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. Galatians 2: 9

How to resolve conflicts, accept differences and have the courage to oppose when it is wrong is always a challenging lesson. Jesus used Paul’s example to teach me something I always overlook:
1. How to accept:
- To look for a good track record and living example(v. 7)
- To recognize the grace in that person(v. 9)
- To be able to put down my pride and prejudice and agree(v. 9)
2. How to oppose: Very simple, what is clearly in the wrong and have the courage to oppose someone face to his face.

Dear Holy Spirit,
I give thanks to you for giving me ways to discern how to accept and how to oppose. Help me to receive your gift of discernment so that I can discern well. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. Galatians 1: 13

Right in the beginning of this first chapter, Paul used strong and heavy words to rebuke the people of the churches in Galatia that they deserted Jesus. Then he told them that his previous way of life before knowing Jesus was even worse. Jesus highlights his mission of his previous way of life: advancing and extremely zealous in Judaism, persecuting and trying to destroy the church of God.

What is your previous life before knowing Jesus? What is your new way of life?

For Paul after he received Jesus as Lord, his mission changed, advancing and being extremely zealous to further Jesus Kingdom, to protect and build up the church. Paul came to know and see that he was being set apart from birth and being called by Jesus to serve the Lord. People praised God because of Paul’s new way of life.

How do people praise God because of your new way of life? What is your new way of life?

Dear Lord Jesus,
I praise you, Lord, for your giving me a new way of life. Help me to live out my new way of life so that I can spend my time in advancing and being zealous of no other things but in you. Help me to protect and build up your church. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority – the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down. 2 Corinthians 13: 10

Paul as an apostle could exercise his authority in a harsh way. But he didn’t do that. He chose to use a spiritual approach to move the people’s heart to listen to him and to willing to be under his authority.

What was the last time that you gave a hard time to your leader? What was the last time that some people under you made you unable to lead? How can Paul’s way help you to be a good leader so that you can use your authority to build up but not tear down?

Dear Lord Jesus,

Today Jesus told me, “You need to have delight in hardships. That’s how I train and love you just as I did to Paul and all my beloved children in order to be humble and not boasting their own self achievements.

I am willing and ready to enter into all those hardships in the coming days because I love Jesus and I know that Jesus loves me. How about you?

If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 2 Corinthians 11: 30

Jesus is very humorous today. What I received from Jesus is today’s title “I am not a fool but a tool”. But when I looked that over in this chapter, I can’t find the word “tool”. This word leads me to think over this chapter in a deeper level. There are 6 “fool” and 9 “boast” in this chapter. Paul was being treated as a “fool”. He was being called useless, and his antagonists were all boasting of how good and useful they were. The Corinthians started not to listen to Paul but rather to those group of boasting leaders. Paul even described some of these as “super-apostles” and even “false apostles”.

According to Acts 18:11, Paul stayed in Corinth for one year and six months to teach people the word of God. How sad that when Paul wrote 2 Corinthians, no one was listening to Paul but rather to those boasting leaders. Paul changed his strategy to use boasting as his message but rather to boast of his weakness and boasting “in the Lord” (2 Cor. 10:17). Those people were boasting of themselves.

What do you think of yourself? Do you know how to boast of your weakness as Paul did? Are you willing to suffer, to be in prison, flogged and in danger as Paul? What would you feel when nobody is listening to you, thinking that you are a fool?! Don’t worry if you are in such kind of situation. Stay on course and focus on Jesus, just like Paul did. For “their end will be what their actions deserve.” 2 Corinthians 11: 15 You are useful, not a fool but a tool to be used by Jesus to bring transformation. Jesus knows you love Him!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to remove any bitterness from being treated as a fool. Teach me to be willing to suffer for you. I love you Lord Jesus. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10: 4-5

Jesus gives us four questions today:
1. Do we know that we are involved in spiritual warfare?
2. Do we know that spiritual warfare requires spiritual weapons?
3. Do you have those spiritual weapons to fight with?
4. Do you know how to exercise those spiritual weapons?

Paul knew well that only spiritual weapons can demolish the Deceiver’s strongholds. He names arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God as strongholds. Do you aware any of those strongholds in your daily life? What about arguments? Have you been in an argumentivc mood against some people?

Are you aware that there are so many things around us being set up against the knowledge of God? Do you have a lifestyle to be more closer to Jesus or are you heading the wrong way? How much time do you spend on working, watching TV, playing games etc? How much time do you spend with Jesus? You can work a lot for Jesus, study a lot about Jesus, but still have no time for an intimate relationship with Jesus.

There are quite a number of spiritual weapons, but let me suggest the most basic one:
1. Real intimate daily devotion
2. Join our 200 days/24 hours prayer campaign (please click the link below to join)
3. Start to try fasting one day a week. A simple and effective way to start is to cut one main meal one day a week.
4. Exercise your spiritual gifts to minister to other people

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to be able to use the spiritual weapons to fight daily spiritual warfare. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9: 6-7

Jesus wants me to challenge you today: Are you a cheerful giver?

If you are a cheerful giver, then you must have experienced the overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God so that other people will praise God for your obedience.

There is no use if we confess that Jesus is our Lord but we keep our wallets, our purses only to our own need!

Jesus asks you today, “Will you be a cheerful giver supplying the need of your home church?”

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to be a cheerful giver that my love to you can overflowing in many expressions of thanks to you. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. 2 Corinthians 8: 2-3

Do you think there is a relationship with how much you love Jesus and how much you make your offerings? Paul says there is. He gave the example of how the Macedonian churches made their offerings in the midst of their most severe trial.

The significant word “Grace”(charis), found ten times in 2 Cor 8-9, reminds us of what we need to exercise our grace in order to respond to God’s grace. The more we experience how gracious God is, the more we will increase our weekly offerings. Paul makes a point in the last verse of this chapter that their making a love offering is the proof of their love so that other churches could see. Paul said, “I am so pleased with you!”

May we increase our offerings to God in our home church and beyond so as to exercise this proof of our love.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to offer as much as I can to respond to your gracious love. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 2 Corinthians 7: 10

Paul knew that his letter to the Corinthians caused sorrow, for no one wanted to listen to someone telling them that they were wrong. He hoped that the sorrow his letter caused could bring repentance. Godly sorrow brings repentance but worldly sorrow brings hatred, bitterness and death.

Jesus led me to think of those times that I could not catch the opportunity to do the thing as Paul did, which is to bring Godly sorrow to some people so as to lead them to repentance. Oh, we need Godly sorrow which brings repentance that leads to salvation.

How do we know that we have Godly sorrow? By the fruits! And those are the earnestness and eagerness to clear ourselves and to bring encouragement and refreshment. How much godly sorrow do people have over their pride, discouragement and bitterness?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to receive Godly sorrow that I can be more like you, and so that I can bring encouragement and refreshment to others. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange - I speak as to my children – open wide your hearts also.
2 Corinthians 6: 11 - 13

Paul states so clearly that the real problem in the church of Corinthians were his fellow workers there. For the past 2,000 years of church history, churches never shrink because of persecution outside but churches shrink and some died because there are internal divisions. Paul uses words like “stumbling block” and “discredited” to give his fellow workers some hints that they should not fall into those traps.

Paul was also being accused of withholding his affection to his fellow workers, but Paul said it is not him but they who were withholding. How sad it is that Christian leaders accuse other fellow workers of being stumbling block, discrediting them and throwing them into lots of hardships as described in vv.5 to 10.

I have been trying all my best to open wide my heart, but I can’t force people to open their hearts to me. I pray that we can learn from Paul’s teaching that we can open wide our hearts to the Lord and to each others.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to open my heart fully to you and to others that your Name may be glorified. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
2 Corinthians 5:17

Jesus told me, “Do you know that you have a new Office?” I replied, “Yes, my Lord. An office as a bishop.” He then said, “Not only that but the most important I give you and other disciples is the Office of Reconciliation. Are you willing to fulfill the requirement of this office?” “Oh, I think I have been doing that.” Jesus responded: “It’s not enough!”

Yes, it is not enough. Jesus turned my eyes to Paul’s three steps of taking this new office:
1. A ministry of reconciliation – bringing people back to God through Jesus.
2. A message of reconciliation – preaching how this can happen.
3. A commission of reconciliation – to be the ambassadors of Jesus to bring reconciliation.

In fact, Paul knew that those fellow workers of him (2 Cor. 6:1) were doing opposite things: bring destruction rather than reconciliation. The new cannot come because the old cannot go. Change is never easy, and transformation always sounds so remote and difficult. The situation was so difficult for Paul to help his fellow workers to be transformed in Christ, and the only hope was to receive this new office. This new office helps them and us to not be the ambassadors of the Deceiver bringing division, dissension, and destruction but true ambassadors of Christ to bring Reconciliation.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Help me to be an ambassador of you to bring reconciliation. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2 Corinthians 4:4

Jesus led me to feel the deep pain of Paul as he tried to use some positive language to help the leaders of the church in Corinth to know that they are blind. The blindness should be the condition of those unbelievers but it happens to Christian clergy and leaders when they lose heart and go back to the old route of secret and shameful ways, using deception and distorting the word of God.

Paul cried for God to let light shine out of the darkness because he was pressed on every side, perplexed, persecuted, struck down and carrying around in his body the death of Jesus. But Paul said that this happened, “so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.”

When Michelle and I finished reading this chapter and I was waiting for her to share what she got from Jesus, suddenly she was full of tears and nothing could stop her tears for quite a few minutes. She told me she felt I was just like Paul and have to experience all that kind of pain. She said that “light and momentary troubles” now will be rewarded when I will be welcomed in heaven by thousands of angels. I laughed and told her that I am not going to die soon because of those persecutions and betrayal. Yes, this situation is so real in our daily life that we can be blinded again. Yet we don’t know we are blind but start to bring darkness, persecution and accusation to other people and sometimes to close friends. Wake up, let the light of Jesus to shine upon you and come back into conscience! Do not be blinded again!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help me to be able to stand firm just like Paul and not be crushed, nor despairing, nor abandoned, nor destroyed. May your light come to shine out of darkness. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

2 Corinthians 3:17

Who does not want freedom? The Lord leads me to see so many faces who are not in freedom. The Lord leads me to see my face when I was not in freedom. Why?

The answer is quite simple: We face the Lord with a veiled soul. We face others with a veiled face. The Spirit of the Lord is not with us so that we cannot reflect the Lord’s glory, not being able to be transformed into his likeness. So many are not free! How sad!

Dear Lord Jesus,

If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven-if there was anything to forgive- I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. 2 Corinthians 2:10-11

Are you really aware of Satan’s schemes? Paul says that Satan’s schemes is to outwit us so that we cannot forgive.

Just like yesterday, Jesus asked me to count how many “griefs” there were in today's passage. I counted nine. Can you recall what happened the last time that you grieved ? The most unbearable grief is when you cannot forgive someone. And Satan’s schemes is to try his best so that we will have some people that we cannot forgive. When we have someone that we cannot forgive, Satan wins!

If you can forgive, then you will be forgiven as well by God and His people. What can be better than changing from unforgivenness to acceptance! Only if you allow Jesus to lead you, then you will be just like the triumphal procession in Rome 2,000 years ago. You will be able to spread everywhere the fragrance of Jesus! How wonderful and glorious we can be if we can forgive!

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for helping me to forgive those that I can never forgive in my own human strength. Lead me to defeat Satan's schemes so that I can forgive. I want to be in the triumphal procession, following your lead and not being captured as a POW of Satan. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. 2 Corinthians 1:5

Jesus led me to do three things when I read this passage:

1. Count how many times that the word“comfort” is used from verse 3 to verse 7. The answer is 9! So many, that is unusual.

2. Count how times that many words similar to 'troubles' or 'suffering' are used from verse 3 to 10. The answer is 12!

I am in the midst of some hardships and under great pressure, but like Paul said, my comfort overflows. The Lord told me this:

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Psalm 23: 5

Just as Paul said, in the midst of troubles, sufferings, distresses, hardships, great pressure, despair, sentences of death, and a deadly peril, through Christ their comfort overflows!
And just now, Jesus suddenly pointed me to verse 21. Praise the Lord for this instant confirmation!

Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
2 Corinthians 1: 21-22

Yes, through Christ, our comfort overflows!

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for giving me these challenges so that I can experience that my comfort overflows. Help me to stand firm in you to experience the “Yes” in your promise. Thank you for giving me your “Yes” just a second ago. That is so wonderful! Oh! I feel the prayers of all those beloved brothers and sisters who have been praying for me the past 150 days, 24 hours a day. Pour down your blessings and anointing to them that they feel your pleasure through their continuous prayers. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

DAY 149 - Please refresh our spirits

Today’s Reading: 1 Corinthians 16

Please read 1 Corinthians 16: 1 – 24 and listen to what the Lord Jesus Christ would like to tell you before reading my Spiritual Journal below. If you would like to learn a simple and good way of Daily Devotion method please read my “Count Down 5” from this blog. You may click this link directly for the method: Subject Shifting Devotion.pdf . (You may begin with a song to praise the Lord and complete you devotion by singing another praise song.)
Please click the links below to 1 Corinthians 16:

I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you. For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition. 1 Corinthians 16: 17-18

Jesus shows me how important it is for us as His disciples to refresh one another's spirit. In Paul's case, he was giving recognition to Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus, for they supplied what was lacking for the Christians in Corinth.

My heart is so heavy to feel how sad Paul was when he wrote this letter to the church in Corinthians to solve their problems. He had to warn and teach them as an apostle, but had to do it in a loving way so people would keep on being reminded to love, to be strong and to be able to refresh other people. My heart is so heavy now to see that there is no difference 2,000 years later. The Deceiver still tries all his best to steal all those things away from us, and leave a “killing field” for Christians to suffer if we are not careful to avoid stepping into the trap.

May we pray for each other daily that we can refresh one another's spirits and not vice versa!

Dear Lord Jesus,

I give thanks for all those reminders that we need to do everything in love and to refresh others. Help me to be a channel to love and to refresh. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
