"Since you trust in your deeds and riches,
you too will be taken captive."

"We have heard of Moab's pride - her overweening pride and conceit,
her pride and arrogance
and the haughtiness of her heart.
I know her insolence but it is futile," declares the Lord,
"and her boasts accomplish nothing.
Jeremiah 48: 7, 29-30

Bible Study

Moab was on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. The Moabites were descendants of Lot, Abraham's nephew (Genesis 19: 30-37). The Moabites were often in conflict with Israel.

Jeremiah prophesied many of the Moabites cities would be overthrown. It did happen that Moab was conquered by the Babylonians and disappeared as a nation.

We can see why God's punishment poured down heavily to destroy this nation. We got some of the key words in the verses above:
1. Trust in their deeds and riches.
2. Pride, conceit, arrogance and the haughtiness of her heart and her insolence and boasting.

Do you have those problems?

My Spiritual Journal

What I got from Jesus today is: Don't trust in your deeds and riches!

As I go over the two points above as the main reasons of how Moab was being destroyed as a nation, there are two key points we need to watch out.
1. Where do you put your trust?
Most people trust in their deeds and riches just as the Moabites. Actually, trusting in things or people other than God is what we call idolatry!
2. Our world-like lifestyle and character
To have those kind of signs like the Moabites is now almost a kind of "norm" to people all over the world. That's the key to success to have "Pride, conceit, arrogance and the haughtiness of her heart and her insolence and boasting." Lots of people are living in that kind of lifestyle and have that kind of character. One word to conclude this kind of character "Me". It's the "me, me , me" culture dominating the world now!

What about you? Can you be more Christ-like rather than the opposite starting from today?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to trust only in you and you alone and that because of our daily intimate personal relationship with you we can be more and more like you. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.
